Appliances are a definite necessity in your home. Although you may be able to function without a washer or dryer, there are two major appliances that you cannot do without and those are a stove and refrigerator. Most of us are familiar with the vinyl coatings. However, stainless steel appliances are becoming popular. The dilemma is to choose between vinyl coated, or stainless steel finished appliances.

This article is not to compare brands,or prices but to provide information so the consumer can compare the differences and advantages of stainless steel, brushed stainless steel refrigerators as to those that are vinyl coated.

Vinyl Coated

Although the consumer continues to purchase the vinyl coated refrigerator, there are disadvantages with them that do not occur with the stainless steel refrigerator.

  • The vinyl, over the course of time may turn yellow due to the sun or faulty materials.
  • Chipping often occurs. Once the chips appear, rust does occur in those areas. There are ways to repair those areas. However, often the refrigerator will no longer have that new look to it. At least the repair may protect the metal that is exposed due to the chipping of the vinyl.
  • Shelving is usually coated with vinyl which is subject to chipping and rusting. However, shelving for the refrigerator and freeze can be ordered from the manufacturer but this can be an expensive venture. The cost averages between $30-60 (per shelf) and above depending on the size of the shelf, and materials used.

Stainless Steel Refrigerator

Stainless steel has been used in commercial establishments for years. Over the recent years, stainless steel appliances have become more popular with home owners. Stainless steel appliances do have an advantage over those that are vinyl coated.

  • Scratches or nicks do not result in rusted areas. a
  • No discoloration or staining
  • Long life span-The mechanical life span will often run out while the appliances continue to have a new look to them.
  • Ease of cleaning

Cleaning often does not require much more than warm water and a cloth. Microfiber cloths work well for cleaning stainless steel.

Glass cleaner works fine to clean and shine your stainless steel. Window cleaner is great for getting rid of those little hand prints

A mild detergent can be used, but you will need to rinse well then polish with a dry cloth due to spotting and streaks.

Stainless steel cleaner may be used should scratches appear. These cleaners are often used to polish the stainless steel as well. There are multiple stainless steel cleaners on the market. However, the downside to stainless steel cleaners is that they leave an oily type coating which seems to create more hand prints and spots whenever the stainless steel is touched.

The matte finish is not as susceptible to those annoying looking fingerprints and hand prints.

Whether it be brushed stainless or the traditional, if you want to clean and keep your stainless streak free, which being Eco conscious, vinegar is safe to use. You do not have to dilute the vinegar.
